AMMAN/DUBAI, Under the theme “The Impact of Conflict and Changes on Children in the Region,” UNICEF and CNN Arabic are calling journalists around the Middle East and North Africa to nominate work that best tells the story of children, their rights, challenges, dreams, aspirations and achievements.
“We’re delighted to relaunch this media award in partnership with CNN Arabic. This is a small tribute to journalists around the region who worked hard to raise awareness on children’s rights through the media” said Juliette Touma, Regional Chief of Communication with UNICEF.
Covering five categories, the call encourages young journalists from around the region to submit nominations in:
TV broadcasted news pieces
Radio
Print news articles
Photojournalism
Social media including blogs and Vlogs
“This award aims at recognizing the role of young and bright journalists from the region who work tirelessly and professionally to tell what continues to be an under-reported story: children” said Caroline Faraj, CNN Vice President/ Arabic Services.
Over the past years and as conflict escalated in several countries around the region, millions of children and their families have been impacted. The number of children who are now in need of assistance is nearly 28 million.
Around the region, political turmoil combined with poverty and a decline in access to basic service has severely impacted children’s education. According to a UNICEF study, one in every four children in the region are either out of school or at risk of dropping out.
